American Farmers Consider Abandoning Use of GM Seeds!

It's all about the yield...cost benefit analysis.  Fact is simple, the highest  per acre yields for crops are in Asia, specifically China where they use NO genetically modified seeds, as in ZERO PERCENT.  Farmers here in America who are using GM seeds are seeing diminished returns on the extra investment in GM seeds.  It cost almost $100 per acre more to use GM tainted seeds than to use normal seeds, and many American farmers are not seeing a good return on their investment for all kinds of reasons, but basically because the promise and reality of higher yields is simply not materializing.

Monsanto and other companies promised, as example, that crops would be resistant to certain pests for up to 40 years...the period of time it was supposed to take certain pests to develop resistance/immunity to the herbicide.  Turns out that some of these pests (bugs) are developing resistance much sooner (14 years) than expected, eating plants, getting sick, but not dying.  So, as resistance to GM seeds and herbicides (Roundup) grows, super bugs,super pests and super weeds are developing in our American Farm Fields.

Bottom line...after using GM seeds for ten years the big promise of GMO's is failing to materialize, as there is no real change in yields, and in some cases field yields are down.  A farmer who is planting 200 acres has spent $200,000 more over ten years to plant GM seeds under the promise of higher yields and the gains are not there.  So, they are now considering, even wanting to return to using normal seeds but there is a problem.  Finding non-GM seeds!  Here in America where 87 percent of our farmers plant GM seeds, finding non GM Seeds is all but impossible!  THAT IS SCARY.

Control the seeds, control the food chain...Monsanto seeds make up a terrifying 91 percent of soybeans, 88 percent of cotton and 91 percent of maize, according to the Center for Food Safety.

GMO Toxicity...Risk Factors For Soil, Plants and Animals

The Bio Technology industry with Monsanto in the lead is spending millions of dollars to convince Congress and the America people that GMO's are good for us, good for the economy, and good for the planet.  Yet most Americans, most industrialized countries oppose inclusion of GMO's in our food, and want food containing GMO's to be labeled as such.  The industry insists there is no need for such labeling contending that GMO foods are safe to eat, and safe for the environment.  Two quick points...if GMO's are so safe for us to eat, then why not label such GMO Foods?  Secondly, it would seem our guaranteed freedom of choice should dictate labeling so that we as consumers can make our own decisions, our own choices about the food we eat.  To help you make your own mind up about GMO's, here are seven ways in which GMO's can harm soil, plants and animals.

1.  Monsanto claims that humans cannot tell the difference between foods containing genetically modified organisms and NATURAL FOOD.  Perhaps from a taste perspective this might be correct, but a study published in the journal Nature Biotechnology would suggest our bodies on a cellular or sub-cellular level can tell the difference.  The 2004 study found transgenic plant DNA in the GMO foods actually persists in the human gastrointestinal tract post consumption of these EXPERIMENTAL FOODS.(Learn More)

2.   The Seralini Study gives us solid information that lab rats (animal testing) fed a life long diet of GMO foods sprayed with Roundup (Monsanto) developed tumors that took over their entire bodies. In short, the study suggests a DIRECT LINK between the consumption of GMO foods and CANCER. 

"A Roundup-tolerant maize and Roundup provoked chronic hormone and sex dependent pathologies. Female mortality was 2–3 times increased mostly due to large mammary tumors and disabled pituitary. Males had liver congestions, necrosis, severe kidney nephropathies and large palpable tumors. This may be due to an endocrine disruption linked to Roundup and a new metabolism due to the transgene.  GMOs and formulated pesticides must be evaluated by long term studies to measure toxic effects."

3.  Contrary to industry claims that the use of herbicides would decrease with the advent and introduction of GMO's into our crops, the use of herbicides like Monsanto's Roundup instead has DRAMATICALLY increased by over 527 million pounds since the introduction of GMO's.  Herbicides like Roundup get into and persist in soils, and waterways, often times contaminating our fresh drinking water supplies.

4.  GMO crops damage native species, passing on their traits to the native species in the area...this is proved beyond debate by Monsanto's own lawsuits against farmers whose crops were contaminated by adjoining farms using GMO seeds.  Even more disturbing..."GMOs are also responsible for killing off bees, bats, butterflies, and other pollinators, whose bodies are unable to handle the onslaught of altered DNA and chemicals that are characteristic of GMO technologies." 5.  GMO's and Roundup are POLLUTING our environment.  2011 study published in  journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Science found that the Bacillus thuriengensis (Bt) bacteria engineered into Monsanto's GM corn can now be found in hundreds of streams and waterways throughout the U.S. Midwest.   The pollution of our waterways by Roundup is even more dramatic.

6.  Studies of GMO's and Roundup have shown they rob soil of much needed minerals and healthy bacteria.

7.  Roundup and GMO's are creating herbicide resistant SUPER WEEDS!  Just like certain virus are developing immunity to antibiotics, weeds which survive a GMO/Roundup Tsunami are mutating into Super Weeds which are resistant, even immune to the GMO technologies.

Can we as humans, can our world afford the long term pains that any short term gains GMO's might provide us?  The answer is no, and most developed nations realize this...sadly, Monsanto money being doled out in Washington DC has our government here in America on the WRONG SIDE of this issue.

Ben & Jerry's GMO Free by 2015

Who among us does not have a soft spot for Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream...my own favorites are "Cherry Garcia" (old Dead fan here) and Chunky Monkey,  and sure most of us have our own favorite flavors as well as memories surrounding our FIRST TASTE of this iconic ice cream brand that has ALWAYS BEEN so environmentally and socially aware as a company.  So, it was with a happy heart today that I read an article announcing Ben & Jerry's is going GMO FREE with the target goal being 2015!  Doing a Snoopy Happy Dance here at such incredible news from one of my own favorite company's!

The statement from the company is calling for full disclosure labeling...WOOT WOOT, and has gone on further to state their company's goal is to source only non GMO ingredients for thier products by the end of this year, though transition times may carry over into 2014...bottom line...a GMO FREE Ben and Jerry's ice cream treat by 2015!  That is truly cause for celebration, and a very special thanks goes out to Ben & Jerry's for showing the world once again why they are leaders in Corporate Responsibility!

Rogue Monsanto GMO Wheat Crop Threatens Food Supply

At 57 I am a relatively healthy man, and work at trying to be healthy...I eat good most of the time, try to avoid fattening foods, and have recently been shedding a few pounds by incorporating more organically grown fruits and vegetables into my daily diet.  It was this change in my food choices that saw me "become aware" of the dangers of GMO's (Genetically Modified Organisms) and the dangers they are presenting to our food supply here in America, and around the world...a danger that we all are now becoming much more aware of as companies like Monsanto try to control and patent the very foods we need to sustain life.

 

The more I learned, the more alarming use of GMO's in our food supply and has become in my life. So a regular part of my morning routine now includes doing a quick Google search to see what is new in GMO news.

 

Today there is a very disturbing article out about ROGUE GMO wheat found growing in a farmer's field out in Oregon! Can hear readers asking themselves, "Rogue Wheat?"

 

The strain in question was developed YEARS AGO by the king pin of genetically modified organisms, Monstanto...of course it was, and for some reason which they choose not to share with us, the experimental strand of wheat which was supposed to tolerate it's Round Up herbicide and the testing of it were discontinued in 2004.  All the test plots were supposedly cleared, the wheat, seeds and anything else associated with the experimental wheat destroyed by those farmers who had been involved in the project ON A VOLUNTARY BASIS...read this to mean there was no actual follow up done to make sure these folks actually destroyed all the seeds, and if you are thinking our beloved USDA was keeping a close eye on things, forget about that as they do not have adequate funds to properly police these types of things. LOVELY!

 

Fast forward to 2013 and the crop of Rogue wheat found in Oregon...major concern in this fast breaking story is this UNAPPROVED Rogue Wheat strand has for years now found its way into our FOOD SUPPLY, thus potentially tainting untold amounts of our wheat supplies. The concern is of such magnitude that Japan has CANCELLED a major wheat order pending further investigation into the matter.

 

Isn't it time for the United States government to just say "NO" to genetically modified organisms?
